How is Patio Furniture Made?

Depending on the material of choice there are different ways in which our patio furniture is constructed. Let us start by telling you that we work directly with our manufactures, and our attention to quality is un-paralleled in the industry.

Wicker Patio Furniture;

Our outdoor wicker patio furniture collections including; patio sets (dining),  deep seating sets, outdoor sectionals, patio bar furniture, deck boxes, chaise lounge chairs, bistro sets, garden benches, outdoor rockers and outdoor planters.

Wicker furniture is very popular for dual settings indoors or out. Deep seating comes in both outdoor sofas and patio love-seats. Patio bar collections come with patio bar chairs or counter height seating. Outdoor wicker furniture can be modern, sleek or traditional.

All our outdoor wicker is;

  •  First the aluminum frames, rust free,  are manufactured using a sand cast method once this is complete the weaving process can begin.
  • Our outdoor wicker is produced and then UV treated to prevent discolouration, oxidation and cracking.
  • Each wicker furniture piece is then hand woven. Strands of durable outdoor wicker wrapped over the aluminum frames. Each piece of wicker takes time to complete and is very labour intensive.
  • You will notice the wicker stands come in a variety of weaves often referred to as rope or wrapped wicker.

The art of making wicker furniture stems from a design around comfort and practicality. Outdoor wicker generally requires plush cushions which make all the comfort difference. You will find most of our wicker furniture is available in Sunbrella outdoor fabrics.

Tip: Look carefully at the weave and ensure that the wicker is a high quality viro synthetic weave so its protected from the elements. Is the frame steel? If so it will rust quickly as the moisture will accumulate under the weave.

Cast Aluminum Patio Furniture;

Cast aluminum patio furniture is ideal outdoors because it is rust free. Cast aluminum patio furniture comes in several models including; patio sets, deep seating sets, outdoor sectional, bistro sets, garden benches, planters and so forth.

Our cast aluminum patio furniture;

  • Starts with our team of designers who create the drafts, and then we create a mold for the patio furniture piece.
  •  Our traditional manufacturing process starts with the perfect wood mold that is smoothened to perfection. At this time, a sample is made to prepare it for testing.
  •  After inspection we decide whether or not it meets our high standards of quality and design.
  • Each cast aluminum piece is sand casted.
  • Each finished piece is then filed down to perfection followed by an intense cleaning process.
  • Our cast aluminum outdoor furniture all go thru an intense 3 stage powder bake paint process. In this process the paint is baked into the chair preventing harmful UV rays from damaging the finish.

Tip: Unlike many other retailers, you will not find steel in our cast patio furniture. Often you will find a chair called cast aluminum however, the manufacture will add a thin steel tubular bar in the legs to give the perception of a heavy grand chair. We refuse to take short cuts in our manufacturing process.

Teak Patio Furniture:

Teak patio furniture has and will continue to be apart of the urban outdoor landscape. Wood furniture has been around since the invention of the Adirondack chair in the early 1800’s. Teak furniture comes in every outdoor piece imaginable. Teak patio sets and teak steamers are by far the most popular pieces of outdoor wood furniture.

All our teak patio furniture is grade A sustainably harvested plantation teak. Our teak is strictly supervised by the conservation management team, a branch of the Indonesian government. The certified teak is sustainably harvested and each tree cut down is replaced by at minimum 2 new tress.

Teak furniture is;

  • Cultivated under strict Government regulated standards.
  • Once approved for manufacturing the teak is cut and sent to the factory.
  • The teak is then air dried to get the best results in the manufacturing process.
  • The teak wood is cut using a mortie and tenon jointing process.
  • The finished wood is then hand sanded until its velvety smooth.

We use nothing less than Grade A teak for our outdoor furniture. Grade A teak means that the tree is greater than 45 yrs. old giving it a high concentration of natural oils giving you the longevity. Grade B teak is generally a tree 15 yrs. or younger and if used to manufacturer patio furniture it will suffer from water damage very quickly.

Teak is the your best choice for wood outdoor furniture because its dense, has a high concentration of natural oils making it resistant to rotting. If left untreated our premium teak will grow more beautiful with time, turning into a soft silvery grey colour. If you prefer the rich brown flavour of the teak colour its imperative to apply a teak oil to your furniture each year.

We finish all our plantation teak furniture and accessories off with solid brass hardware.

Tip: Teak patio furniture however, is not impervious to some retailers, using other woods as teak substitutes.  If the retailer has a jazzy name for the type of “teak” be suspect and do your research. We sell teak and call it just that.

Cast Iron & Wrought Iron Patio Furniture;

Insideout Patio doesn’t sell cast iron and wrought iron patio furniture.

  • Its constructed out of steel.
  • In short, it will rust, ruin your patio, deck or balcony and not worth the trouble nor the money.

Tip: Cast iron and wrought iron rust and can rust quickly. Many advise you can re-paint them. If you were to do re-paint them properly it would cost you more than the original purchase. Buyer Beware!

How do I determine the quality of patio furniture?

Patio furniture is an investment and should be treated as such. The market is flooded with lots of patio furniture and outdoor accessories. Make an informed decision about your next purchase of patio furniture or any outdoor related accessory.

Wicker Patio Furniture;

  • You have to look specifically at the wicker quality the more weaving and tighter the weaving the more complex and stronger the furniture is.
  • Ensure the outdoor wicker is UV protected.
  • Always feel the wicker to ensure it just doesn’t feel like a piece of plastic, as often displayed in the major department stores.
  • Ensure the frame is all aluminum so it doesn’t rust especially when the moisture sits under the wicker weaving.
  • Check the furniture and ensure you have a double as opposed to single wicker wall.
  • Are the cushions outdoor materials such as Sunbrella? Or are they inexpensive polyester fabrics that will fade, grow mildew and smell after the first rainfall?

Does my patio furniture need to be covered in the winter?

Quality patio furniture is made to withstand the outdoor elements all year round. However, we recommend that all patio furniture be covered throughout the winter months. Covering your garden furniture helps maintain its finish.

Gazebo fabrics, umbrellas, and cushions should be stored indoors during the winter season and not exposed to the elements.

Tip: Prior to covering your garden furniture ensure it is dry and free from moisture. Ensure you tighten your covers to prevent the wind from blowing them off your furniture.
